Abstract:
Desk-based assessment was undertaken of a proposed development site, which lay close to the edge of an area which was thought to have defined the medieval settlement of Chorley. Evidence of prehistoric and Roman activity recorded in the area was negligible, with the only notable sites comprising the findspot of a silver clasp and chain of Roman date, and the course of a Roman road. Saxon activity in the area was attested by place-names, including Chorley itself, and the history of the manor had been documented since 1246. Cotton weaving had been an important local industry, escalating in the years after 1750. Three stone-built weavers' cottages lay close to the proposal site, and similar dwellings were known to have lain within the site itself. The standing cottages had been cellared, and it was considered likely that the proposal site could also contain cellars, potentially dating from the mid-18th century. It was noted that material associated with medieval Chorley could also potentially be present. It was recommended that a watching brief should be carried out during groundworks associated with the proposed development. [AIP]
