Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the submission of a planning application for a series of development proposals. The SMR showed the archaeological potential for the surrounding area to be good, with both Palaeolithic and Neolithic artefacts having been retrieved from the site. It was unlikely that an archaeological survey was carried out before or during the construction of Whitely Village in the early 20th century, and it was possible that this area may produce further evidence relating to these and other periods of activity. The location of the site close to the River Mole and on River Terrace gravel deposits was believed to have increased its overall archaeological potential as a site that was likely to have provided good conditions for ancillary settlement of the area. The potential importance of St George's Hill in the Palaeolithic period was based on material retrieved from the gravel plateau. An examination of the geological survey map indicated the lack of Plateau Gravel this far from the summit of the hill, although stray finds relating to Iron Age activity could not be ruled out. The majority of the locations appeared to be undisturbed by modern development, although in some cases tree roots may have caused extensive disturbance to buried archaeological features. Location F appeared to have undergone a degree of ground disturbance, associated with earlier terracing in this area, and it was highly likely that any archaeological evidence in this area had already been removed. Gravel pits were marked in the area of the site of the 'very sheltered accommodation'. It was, however, difficult to determine at this stage the extent of the extraction, or the degree of impact it caused. Further evaluation in the form of trial trenches was recommended. [Au(adp)]
