Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development was undertaken. Two large assemblages of Mesolithic and Neolithic artefacts had been found in the vicinity of the site, and an extensive array of Iron Age enclosures and occupation evidence lay immediately to the east. A probable Iron Age enclosure and a saucer barrow lay on the site itself, and several cropmarks appeared to represent further Bronze Age barrows. A Roman road and an undated trackway ran along the western and southern edges of the site respectively. Two medieval settlements had been recorded in the area. It was noted that the site had undergone extensive ploughing which would have damaged any standing archaeological remains, but that no groundworks had occurred which might have affected buried remains.
