Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an office development identified that no pre-medieval sites had been recorded in the immediate vicinity of the site, although a small number had been recorded in the general surrounding area. Mesolithic flintwork had been found to the south and west, and a Roman tile production centre had lain c. 1.5km to the east. The town of Reigate had originated as a planned new town in the late 12th century. The proposal site lay adjacent to the Norman castle, which had almost certainly been established in the late 11th century. It was concluded that the site had a limited archaeological potential, but that a watching brief should be carried out during major ground disturbance associated with the development. It was noted that this would be particularly important in the area of the access road, 'Area B', as confirmation of the precise date at which development had occurred at this location would be valuable. Later observation of geotechnical test-pits at the site revealed that considerable disturbance had previously occurred. Two struck flints and fragments of undated tile were recovered. The observations did not alter the recommendations of the assessment. [AIP]
