Abstract:
Eight trial trenches were excavated, positioned to examine a selection of geophysical anomalies and blank areas. Evidence of Late Iron Age activity related to domestic settlement was uncovered. A previously unrecorded ditch, which had fallen into disuse in the late 17th century, may provide information on post-medieval land use in this area. Trenches 5 to 8 appeared to confirm the geophysical survey that SL2 and SL3 were two separate sites within intervening features. Although no evidence for Roman activity was recovered, it seemed probable, judging by surface finds and previous survey, that some form of Roman settlement pattern had followed on from the Iron Age. The large feature within Trench 3 may well have related to the Roman road. Though no structural or material evidence related to Roman occupation was recovered, it was possible that the road resembled more of a green lane or hollow-way. [Au(adp)]
