Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was prepared to inform a proposal to replace an antenna upon a mobile telecommunications mast and to install a further ancillary equipment cabinet close by, adjacent to 'The Fosse' public house. The study area consisted of a small area of ground immediately around the proposed development and with regard to the line of Hadrian's Wall this study looked a little further to both east and west. The proposed development lay within the corridor of Hadrian's Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and for most of its course a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Only a 30m stretch of the Curtain Wall here was Scheduled and the area lay immediately west of the proposed development. The results of the assessment confirmed the course of the Curtain Wall in the general area, as well as raising the possibility that either a milecastle or a turret may have lay in the vicinity of the study area. It was recommended that further archaeological mitigation be carried out. [Au(abr)] |
