Abstract:
Evaluation and limited desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a housing development, which would involve new construction and the conversion of existing agricultural buildings, were carried out. These buildings had previously formed part of New Farm, which had existed from at least the 17th century. The site lay within the area of a large enclosure which also contained the 14th century parish church, and may have represented an original component of a planned medieval village. Documentary evidence suggested the existence of a dwelling house and school house of unknown date in an untested area of the site. A well was known to survive beneath a proposed access route. During the evaluation, a linear cobbled spread which resembled a roadway excavated at a site 500m to the north was revealed. Impacted into its surface were 17th and 18th century pottery, tile and clay pipe fragments and animal bone. This feature demonstrated that the village's early road system had been subject to a significant change in direction in the post-medieval period. A projection of its course indicated that it passed beneath several existing buildings. An undated culvert and modern agricultural structures which would have destroyed any archaeological deposits present were encountered in one area of the site. [AIP]
