Abstract: |
Four evaluation trenches were excavated in the impact area of a proposed car park. A trench probably cut for the removal of a Roman or Anglo-Saxon wall foundation, was identified in the southernmost evaluation trench, along with two other undated features. Beam-slots, also of uncertain age, but perhaps early medieval in date, were found in the two middle trenches. Later, presumably post-medieval or modern, terracing had partially truncated the western side of the impact area. A later post-medieval water conduit may have crossed the impact area and an access tunnel to a Second World War bunker may have lain under its north-eastern corner. [Au(abr)] |
