Abstract: |
The desk-based archaeological assessment for proposed redevelopment of the site showed that the site was likely to contain archaeological remains relating to the Roman and medieval south suburbs and the Civil War period. Previous excavations at Bonners Lane were of particular relevance in indicating the types of remains likely to be present. In addition, three excavations in the vicinity, undertaken during the last ten years, off Oxford Street and York Road had uncovered significant remains of a Roman, medieval and post-medieval date. Roman buildings, features and burials may be located within the development area. Two Saxon buildings had been recorded in the vicinity and occupation of this date was possible. Medieval structures and back-yard activity were also likely to be found in the area. Late medieval and early post-medieval industrial activity was also known close by, off Bonners Lane. Remains associated with the Civil War sieges of Leicester in 1645, including defensive earthworks, were also likely. In addition, post-Civil War late 17th and 18th century buildings associated with the re-building of the south suburbs were likely to be present. The proposed development area, therefore, was recognised as having a very significant archaeological potential. [Au(abr)] |
