Abstract:
This assessment consisted of two elements, a desk-based study covering an area of seven square kilometres along the River Allen, and a walk-over survey for a smaller area around the settlement of Sladesbridge. The application area was a landscape of considerable time depth comprising evidence of prehistoric enclosures, medieval farmsteads and their associated field systems, as well as the post-medieval remains of milling activity along the River Allen and quarrying. The study area stretched from Egloshayle, to Pencarrow House in the east and Dinham's Bridge to the north. A total of 33 archaeological sites of local importance were identified within the area of the walk-over survey. These included the former courses of the River Allen, a quay, a leat marking the former line of the River Kestle, a number of historic buildings within Sladesbridge, two bridges over the River Kestle, mill activity at Kestle Mill, remains of the North Cornwall Railway, trackways and quarries. A number of features were documented or remembered by local people, of which there were no known surviving remains. These included three quays and two limekilns. Modern features noted as part of this assessment included drainage ditches, ponds by Kestle Mill and flood embankments. A total of six field boundaries were identified within the detailed study area, only two of which could be regarded as 'important', according to the criteria of the 1997 Hedgerow Regulations. A further 73 sites were identified within the greater study area, and included four Iron Age/Romano-British enclosures. [Au(abr)]
