Abstract: |
The excavation identified significant and widespread archaeological survival on the site, including the structural remains of early 19th century workers cottages and their yards. These belonged to Cliff Bank Square, a courtyard development of seventy-two cottages purpose built for pottery workers from the nearby factory of Josiah Spode II. Prior to 1802, the site had been occupied by the pot works of John Harrison, evidence for which was found in the form of the partial remains of a potter's oven and quantities of 18th century pottery waste.
