Abstract: |
A watching brief was maintained during shaft-capping operations on eighteen shafts in the vicinity of Marriott's Shaft during 1993 and 1994. Although no direct evidence of early mining was revealed, shallow tunnels were found which could date from any time before the mid-19th century, and some of the workings were identified as having already been abandoned or capped before the expansion of the site in the early 19th century. It seemed however that the discovery and working of the lodes here occured relatively recently, perhaps as late as the beginning of the 19th century. [Au(adp)] |
