Abstract:
A programme of archaeological work was carried out in advance of the development of Woolsington Hall and Park into a sporting club. The development site was a historic park of known 17th century origin and may have been the location of a deserted medieval village identified from documentary sources. The Hall was Listed Grade II*, and other buildings were Listed Grade II. Aspects of the construction works associated with the development may have an impact on potential archaeological deposits on the site. Excavation trial trenches were dug to evaluate this potential. The ten trenches excavated identified foundations walls, a feature interpreted as a capped well, pits, several drainage features and deposits of made ground. These were all 19th century or later in date. None were associated with an earlier phase of the Hall or medieval activity. The absence of archaeological features or residual material of medieval or earlier date on the site suggested that the medieval settlement was located elsewhere. [Au(abr)]
