Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed route of a water pipeline identified that a group of artefacts of mainly Romano-British and medieval date had been found c. 250m to the north of the northern end of the route, and that a small group of prehistoric artefacts, including fragments of a Bronze Age spearhead and a Bronze Age knife, had been found nearby. At the northern end of the pipeline corridor, a proposed reservoir and a works compound were to be located in an area characterised by cropmarks. Features at this site comprised field boundaries and a probable droveway associated with a relict landscape of probable later prehistoric and Romano-British date. A field system had been identified by cropmarks to the south of the terminus of the proposed corridor, at West Moor. A cropmark enclosure had been recorded elsewhere in the vicinity, but the potential impact of the proposals on this feature could not be identified. It was recommended that geophysical survey should be carried out at several locations along the route, and that watching briefs should be carried out within two areas. Further research into the location of the cropmark enclosure was also recommended. [AIP]
