Abstract: |
A desk-based archaeological and historical assessment was undertaken of the site which was intended for proposed development as houses, flats and garages. The first recorded usage of the study area was shown on a map of Clifton drawn up by Jacob De Wilstar in 1746 for the Society of Merchant Venturers. He depicted a large property with an extensive garden on the site. The date, character and function of this building was unknown. The site was redeveloped in the early 18th century as a mixture of residential and light commercial properties, which, apart from some rebuilding and structural alterations, remained relatively unchanged until the 1930s. The site was cleared of buildings in the post-war period and was presently covered in grass, trees and wall remains. [Au(abr)] |
