Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on the excavation of two new soakaways together with channels for five new drains leading from the gutters to these soakaways. No human remains were disturbed in these works, which was unsurprising in view of the age of the church and the fact that there were no recorded burials in the flower bed next to the south wall nor in the grass path to the south of that. The only deposit of archaeological interest was a thick rubble layer associated on the one hand with the preparation for the grass path and on the other with the destruction of the old church adjacent to the Bishop's Palace.
