Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment concluded that the site was likely to contain a deeply buried layer of Roman slag and finds, the medieval city wall, the foundations of the medieval church of St Clement's, medieval and associated burials, the city ditch, a Civil War sconce, the channel which lay on the boundary of St Clement's and St Nicholas' parishes, post-medieval build up layers and fields as well as the 19th century cattle market and timber yard. The study determined that there was not likely to be a great degree of disturbance from later development on the site. Any development was going to require very careful consideration with respect to foundation design and lay out of buildings on the site. It was likely that this was one site where archaeological evaluation would be required not only for planning processes but also be beneficial to the drafting of architect's and engineer's proposals. It was advised that future proposals for the site involved archaeological input at the earliest feasible stage. [Au(abr)] |
