Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken of the site which had recently received planning approval for residential and amenity development. The evaluation comprised the excavation of eight 3m wide trenches of varying lengths which represented a c.4% sample of the 1.6ha site. Evidence of past flooding was recorded through the identification of alluvial clays and silts over the eastern part of the site. Other than a single flint barbed and tanged arrowhead of Early Bronze Age date found in the topsoil, the only other features were a series of 20th century post holes probably associated with the former race course. The report concluded that there was a true absence of archaeological activity on this site, with early populations preferring to occupy and settle the area to the west of Graburn Way (excavated in 1994) which was at least 1.25m higher than the present site and therefore less prone to flooding. It was considered that neither element of the development proposals, housing nor landscaping would result in an archaeological impact. [Au(abr)]
