Abstract:
The desk-based archaeological assessment for the proposed building showed that the site lay in the south-eastern part of the historic walled town of Roman and medieval Leicester on a known medieval street. Roman pottery had been found by salvage work in the proposed development area. A possible Roman road surface had been discovered nearby and other Roman finds had been made in Cank Street. Roman buildings were known in the vicinity. The area was probably located outside the early medieval market place but it was possible that Cank Street marked its limit. Medieval pits containing pottery had been found within the proposed development area. A medieval jug containing cat bone had been found at 40 Cank Street. 'The Cank Well' was also located to the south-west of the development area. The proposed development area, therefore, was recognised as having significant archaeological potential, notably for Roman and medieval remains, which may have survived to a considerable depth. Further archaeological work was recommended to better ascertain the site's archaeological potential. [Au(abr)]
