Abstract: |
The evaluation revealed the presence of a substantial east-west ditch, located in the southern part of the site, interpreted as possibly part of the medieval town ditch. Other features included a series of medieval pits and linear features, some of which contained pottery of 13th to 15th century date. These features were sealed by a substantial soil horizon found over most of the site. This soil horizon produced pottery ranging in date from the late medieval period to the 19th century. It was suggested that this was a garden soil and that the site was given over to horticulture in the post-medieval period. The brick footings and cellars of a number of post-medieval buildings were identified cutting into the garden soil. [Au] |
