Abstract: |
The evaluation encountered natural bedrock in the eastern corner of the area investigated at 1.2m below ground level and was observed to slope downwards to an unknown depth in the northerly and westerly directions. The majority of deposits observed in all three trenches appeared to be the result of post-war building demolition and probable clearance of bomb damage from the Devonport area, with soil layer (501) being a levelling layer on top of this debris. It would appear that the site had undergone considerable landscaping in recent years, which had removed the remains of George's Bastion. The only hints of its presence can be seen in the occasional faced limestone ashlar blocks found within the modern demolition rubble, which may have formed part of the Bastion before its destruction. The slope of the natural bedrock away to the north may also be suggestive of the Dock lines fortification, which consisted of a ditch and rampart. The trenches were not excavated down to natural bedrock at all points, due to the very unstable nature of the material that they cut through, which readily collapsed under its own weight. [Au] |
