Abstract: |
The archaeological evaluation took place on the land to the west of Manor Farm. The trenches were positioned over linear earthworks, possibly part of the medieval village of West Ashton. When excavated the earthwork consisted of a levelled bank and a ditch. Some of the earthwork exposed by excavation consisted of a waterlogged ditch with a track or yard surface to the southwest where stone rubble suggested a farm building. These ditches may have been part of the bank and ditch surrounding the medieval village or alternatively could have been part of a former track or hollow way just to the west of and parallel with Bratton Road. A further ditch was encountered, possibly part of an enclosure. [Au(abr)] |
