Abstract: |
An assessment of the grounds occupied by the Malling School and its playing fields showed that there may have been traces of a relict landscape including remains of a post-medieval settlement of Crouch Green at the north-western corner of the grounds. The creation of Clare House Park in 1792 had minimal impact on this landscape, other than the removal of this settlement and the conversion of the lower mill pond into a feature of the park. Little change took place until the development of the school in the late 20th century when the south-eastern end was occupied by school buildings and the remaining areas of the Clare House grounds were terraced for playing fields. Despite these disturbances, areas at the northern and north-western end of the site may have retained the original ground surface and in these areas archaeology could have survived beneath scrub land and the terraced ground.
