Abstract: |
A watching brief during groundworks on the site of the former Pearson House, located at the junction of St James Terrace and Standard Hill on the north side of Nottingham Castle, revealed further evidence for sandstone quarrying during the post-medieval period as indicated by the previous field evaluation. The overall shape and orientation of the quarry suggested that it may have followed the alignment of a ditch, possibly being a continuation of the large defensive ditch recorded on land to the north-west, and continuing on a projected alignment leading to the main castle entrance fo the south-east. More foundation remnants of St James Church (built 1808) were also exposed. [AIP] |
