Abstract: |
Staff from the WMS Archaeology Section observed the repair work on sewerage pipes in front of the Guildhall. Signs of modern and post-medieval dumping were visible in the sections, and the presence of quantities of chalk blocks and mortar indicated the demolition of a structure of unknown date or function. The claim that up to three human skeletons were found by the workmen in the trench was supported by the presence of scattered human bone, which may have originated from the cemetery of St Mary's Abbey.
