Abstract:
This evaluation consisted of 64 trenches, excavated in advance of a proposed construction of a surface attenuation pond. Two fields were evaluated, one field lay between the A299 Thanet Way and the Plenty Brook (3.5 ha) and a smaller additional field was evaluated on the north side of the brook (1.7 ha), which represented a 4.5% sample. 38 out of 44 trenches on the first field contained archaeological features and ten out of 20 trenches on the second field. South of the brook had the highest density of features, many of which were in the centre of the eastern half of the field and the north side of the brook features were concentrated on the west side of the field. Features included pits (including pit complexes), gullies, post-holes, ditches and hearths which were mostly of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age (dated by pottery assemblage). There was also some indication of Late Iron Age and Romano-British activity. [AIP]
