Abstract: |
An excavation was carried out at a proposed development site where an earlier evaluation had revealed a wide, fairly shallow feature which had contained ten small fragments of Bronze Age pottery. A number of rock shelters containing evidence of Mesolithic activity had been recorded within 1km of the site, and Neolithic worked flints had been found in the area. A probable Iron Age hillfort lay to the north-east, and evidence of medieval and post-medieval iron-working had been recorded in the vicinity. During the excavation, a small oven or hearth containing burnt stones, daub, charcoal, pottery and animal bone was recorded. The pottery suggested a Late Bronze Age or slightly later date. A second feature contained a flint flake. Two pits containing similar fills were also recorded. A radiocarbon date from one suggested a Late Bronze Age origin. The feature encountered during the evaluation was investigated further, and was found not to have been linear in character, as had previously been assumed. It had been thought that the feature followed the line of a soil mark identified from an aerial photograph. However, the soil mark was found to have been caused by a geophysical anomaly, and it was considered that the feature may have resulted from tree clearance. A monitoring visit was carried out during groundworks at the site, but it was found that topsoil stripping had already been completed prior to the visit. Given the shallow depth at which archaeological deposits had been encountered elsewhere, it was noted that archaeological features may have been destroyed during the topsoil strip. However, an examination of the spoil heap did not reveal any artefacts of archaeological interest. [AIP] |
