Abstract: |
Phase 1 of the Domestic Range Undercroft conversion programme involved archaeological recording in three areas, of which this area was one. Four trial holes / test pits (Trenches B - E) were dug by the contractors in the former Flat area at the northeast end of the range, to test the depth and ascertain the character of the existing wall foundations. This work was observed and recorded. The trial holes showed that a considerable depth of archaeological stratigraphy survives below the standing building and pre-dating it. Unfortunately, the only dating evidence recovered from the layers exposed was a single sherd of 13th century pottery. However, the apparent character of the deposits (layers and pits) suggests that they are unrelated to the early/mid 16th century timber framed kitchen range that preceded the 1670s block, and represent medieval activity. The earlier, medieval castle kitchen would also have been in this area and it is likely that these deposits are layers of rubbish from the kitchen.[AIP] |
