Abstract: |
A second phase of shaft capping, site investigation, geotextile ground reinforcement and the fencing of two shafts at the eastern end of Dolcoath Mine was undertaken between November 1995 and March 1996. Watching briefs were held over the work and the findings included possible evidence for a mid 19th century Man Engine House or dressing floor structure, a stope or adit cut by three or more shafts, and the early 20th century re-use of a shaft by South Crofty Mine. These findings confirmed the value of such watching briefs. The destructive nature of 'site investigation' works to locate mine shafts prior to shaft treatment was highlighted and it was strongly recommended that watching briefs be undertaken during any work of this type in the future, as well as during the actual shaft capping work.
