Abstract:
An intermittent archaeological watching and recording brief was carried out during groundwork for building work. Seventeen site visits were undertaken between September 2005 and December 2006. The natural Upper Chalk was sealed with a layer of colluvium derived from Head deposits. Two later prehistoric worked flints were recovered from the interface of this colluvium, and the topsoil above. Small-scale activity during the medieval period was identified in the northern half of the proposed development area. This consisted of two inter-cutting pit features, containing medieval pottery, medieval roof tile and daub. Both features were indicative of nearby medieval settlement located within Chillenden. A number of later post-medieval features, including a chalk and flint-lined well, brick-lined cess tank, two brick-lined cisterns and the remnants of an external yard surface, all of which appeared to have been contemporary with the occupation of the existing farmhouse and former workshop/barn were exposed. The observed groundwork had no measurable impact on the buried archaeological resource. [Au(adp)]
