Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the proposed A689 Crook Bypass was undertaken. No direct evidence for settlement occupation in the prehistoric or Roman periods was uncovered, though transitory activity may have taken place. Evidence for medieval occupation was recorded, though the foundation date of this occupation was unclear. Later medieval/early post-medieval records referred to the area being a mainly wooded area, with later post-medieval evidence for clearance of the area, and arable and pastoral use of the land. Evidence relating to the rapid expansion of the village of Crook, due to colliery operations in the 19th century, was recorded, as well as evidence of probable large scale disturbance to the area due to colliery, opencasting, and railway construction activity.
