Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out for English Heritage during the course of construction of a new staff car park to the rear of the Youth Hostel building at Pendennis Castle. The work also involved monitoring the excavation of an electric services ducting trench. Concurrently, a watching brief was maintained during groundwork for footpaths and a visitors' car park in the lower Hornworks area north east of the castle. Groundwork for the staff car park revealed the granite footings of a Napoleonic period magazine, the probable footings of early 20th century baths and cookhouse, a stone-lined pit likely to have been a soakaway associated with the baths and cookhouse, a floor fragment from the early 20th century latrines and a number of drainage features. One of the most significant results of the project was the rationalisation and recording of the complex network of buried services in the car park area. The excavation of a trench for the electric service ducting in the car park area revealed a possible Elizabethan wall in Carrick Mount astion and the remains of a possible World War Two firing range.
