Abstract: |
An access road was to be built at Beech Grove, Nonington. An archaeological watching brief was considered necessary because of the presence on adjoining land of a number of cropmark sites revealed by aerial photographic survey. These consisted of oval and sub-rectangular ditched enclosures and ploughed-out round barrows. The area of land to be traversed by the access road had been given over to lawns and pasture for many years, and would not have exhibited cropmarks except under the harshest drought conditions. Terracing excavations at the termination of the access road where a craft shop was to be built were also examined. A particular reason for this was because during construction of the nearby mansion of St. Albans Court in c.1860-1880, burials thought to be Saxon were found, and the shop site was on roughly the same contour. In the event nothing of archaeological interest was observed. [Au(abr)] |
