Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed redevelopment site identified that a number of archaeological sites and findspots had been recorded in the surrounding area, including the remains of a Roman hypocaust, a probable medieval moated site and the probable site of a watermill. Artefacts found had included a Roman urn containing coins, a medieval harness component, a 16th-17th century harness stud and a miniature copper alloy padlock. The proposal site itself had previously been known as Court Lodge; it was suggested that it may have been constructed before the 19th century as a lodge or subsidiary building to the putative manorial site which lay c. 0.5km to the north-east. The present building on the site was a ruinous structure of probable 19th century date. It was concluded that the site had some potential for in situ archaeological remains. It was recommended that a programme of trial trenching should be carried out. [AIP] |
