Abstract: |
The evaluation was carried out close to medieval features, which included a deserted settlement, fishponds and a chapel. Eight of the nine evaluation trenches were located within a walled garden of probable 19th century date. The trench outside the garden revealed no archaeological features, but demonstrated that extensive dumping had taken place. Within the walls, excavation revealed features relating to the layout of the garden. It was thought that the site lay within an area once covered in ridge and furrow, which had been levelled during construction of the garden. Late 19th century OS maps indicated that the layout of the internal paths and a central well/drain had remained intact since the creation of the garden. [AIP] |
