Abstract: |
Five sample trenches were excavated to evaluate land in the grounds of St Matthews Church Hall. The evaluation revealed 13th century activty located away from the medieval Ebley, some way to the west of the site. The presence of a rubbish pit and possible post-hole suggested domestic occupation rather than agricultural practice. The evaluation results were of local significance as they indicated previously unkown focus of 13th century activity away from the medieval settlement of Ebley. It was suggested however that the undisturbed area around the church hall was probably the only remaining area of archaeological potential within the immediate urban environ, which had been subject to much more extensive and recent development.
