Abstract: |
The watching brief of the 1st phase of topsoil stripping during the 1997 season recorded very little in the way of archaeological features. No artefacts were found, and whilst a varied assemblage of wooden remains were recorded, it appeared that only one piece may have been worked. Most of the wood consisted of oak lumps, rootballs from alder scrub, branhes and other small pieces. The remains formed hotchpotch assemblages, often in patches of clay, which were clearly not in situ. It was probable these groupings were washed along to their final resting places during past flood episodes when the channel of the River Medway ran through the site. [Au] |
