Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at Rock Farm, Rock, in an area that forms part of a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Mon No 19131; scheduled 21/7/92). This deserted medieval village site had been ploughed once in April 1992 and the landowner wished to explore the possibility of further ploughing within the SAM. The evaluation identified the presence of medieval deposits relating to a rural settlement. These deposits were limited to the northern part of the evaluation area, in an area containing previously plotted earthworks. Despite having been truncated by ploughing before the site was scheduled, the evaluation trenches demonstrated that the deposits were well preserved, and included evidence of stone and timber structures, building platforms, boundary and drainage ditches and a hollow way. A significant assemblage of pottery representing domestic debris dating from the 13th to the 16th centuries AD was recovered.[AIP] |
