Abstract: |
A desk-based assessement supported by preliminary field survey of land proposed for reclamation works on a site of a former mine was undertaken. The survey identified that only surviving features of the area, once thick with engine houses, ancillary buildings and dressing flloors, comprised two engine houses, situated on a hilltop, and a few scraps of masonry on the valley bottom. The removal of most of the surface features in the area of Cook's Kitchen had been due to the continued working of South Crofty mine. The area had also contained numerous shafts, although these had mostly been obscured by dumping, blocking, and/or surface clearance. [AIP] |
