Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of an extension to sand and gravel workings. Archaeological sites and artefacts recorded in the vicinity included a Bronze Age burnt mound, a Bronze Age axehead, part of an Iron Age gold torc and a number of cropmarks, some of which may have been associated with a medieval deer park. Middleton Hall, a building located immediately north of the site, incorporated some parts of the original 12th century Hall. Geophysical survey of part of the site revealed only indistinct features of possible archaeological origin; a small number of undated or early modern features were recorded during the evaluation. One ditch may have been a post-medieval boundary. It was concluded that the shallow depth of the topsoil at the site made it likely that any surviving archaeological features would have been eroded by modern cultivation. [AIP] |
