Abstract:
Fieldwalking was carried out within three fields which formed part of a National Trust estate. Four archaeological sites had previously been recorded in the western half of Field 17, comprising the findspot of a tranchet axe, an earthwork forming part of a field system, a Romano-British settlement and the findspot of some Neolithic axes and worked flakes. During fieldwalking, a large number of worked flints and flint flakes, three metal objects and 38 pieces of brick and tile were recovered. Within Field 52, large amounts of Romano-British pottery and building materials were collected, providing further evidence that a Romano-British settlement site had existed in the area. Field 54 contained the site of a medieval/post-medieval building, demolished in 1990. Pottery dating from the 14th century to the 17th century was collected from this site and its immediate vicinity. Medieval building material was also found. It was noted that further analysis of material collected within Fields 21, 25 and 26, reported on earlier, had revealed the presence of possible Roman building material from all three fields. Initial processing had failed to identify material of this date. [AIP]
