Abstract: |
A desk-based study, intended to gauge the archaeological implications of any future planning applications, identified that three sites had previously been recorded within the assessment area. These included an area of ridge and furrow, an undated cropmark and part of the Clifton village hazard area, which covered the shrunken medieval village. A number of known prehistoric, Roman and medieval sites also lay in the surrounding area, including standing stones which were a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The last military battle to be fought on English soil, the Battle of Clifton, took place in December 1745 in the area around the village. It was concluded that an archaeological evaluation would probably be required in the event of a development being proposed for the area. [AIP] |
