Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a community centre which lay within the precinct of the former 12th century Keynsham Abbey. The western edge of the site was orientated along the probable line of the boundary wall of the planned medieval town of Keynsham. The site lay within or directly north of the abbey burial ground, and also lay close to the parish church, which may have been the site of a pre-9th century Saxon minster church. During the evaluation, late medieval and post-medieval layers, which included a sequence of successive stone surfaces, were recorded, and a number of features of 14th century or earlier origin were revealed. Evidence of medieval and possibly post-medieval pit-cutting was observed, and a substantial limestone wall was recorded which appeared to represent part of a large building of pre-14th century origin. It was recommended that further excavation should be carried out if it were not possible for the archaeological deposits to remain in situ. [AIP]
