Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed construction of 39 residences with parking facilities. The cartographic and documentary evidence indicated that the site lay close to, or within, the historic core of Sandhurst. There was some uncertainty as to where the original medieval settlement lay, with the church located some distance to the west but with the historic maps and upstanding early post-medieval buildings indicating a focus in the vicinity of the site. In more recent times, prior to the residential development, the area consisted of open space, with few areas affected by the building of structures. There was no evidence to suggest that previous land-use and more recent housing development had led to the truncation of archaeologically relevant layers in the site, as cartographic evidence indicated little change in this area over time. The report recommended further field evaluation. [Au(adp)] |
