Abstract:
An archaeological investigation, consisting of sketch field survey, geophysical survey, evaluation trenching and pollen analysis, was undertaken at Gaverigan in advance of an extension to the tipping area of Wheal Remfry China Clay Pit. Prior to the investigation, the area was considered to have been of high archaeological potential. The results enhanced understanding of the historic character of the study area. There was no direct evidence for prehistoric activity apart from a few flint flakes. Pollen from buried soils indicated a pre-enclosure landscape of grazed, open heathland, which may have been established as early as the Bronze Age. A ring-fence boundary may have represented intitial enclosure of the heathland in the south-western part of the area, perhaps during the medieval period. No medieval settlement or artefacts were found inside the study area however, and it is possible these fields were of a later date. In the eastern part of this system two grubbed out boundaries may have represented an earlier phase of enclosure. Similarity in boundary construction suggested that boundaries shown on the 1840 Tithe map were broadly contempory with the ring-fence boundary. Field names recorded on the Tithe Apportionment Survey indicate that the area remained 'croft' or downland following enclosure. Most of the identified below-ground features were related to the extraction of tin or china clay. This included 19th/20th century prospecting pits (not positively identified in Cornwall prior to this) and complexes of large ditches which fed water to the tin streamworks. These may have been in use from the medieval times to the mid 19th century. [Au(adp)]
