Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that the medieval manor house of Cassio had lain within the proposal area, and that the present house at the site, The Grove, was a Grade II* Listed Building. The Grove had late 16th century origins, but was rebuilt in c. 1720. Prehistoric remains had been recorded in the surrounding area, including a Palaeolithc handaxe, a Neolithic Axe, an Early Bronze Age arrowhead and the site of an Iron Age dwelling. Several Roman sites had also been discovered, including findspots of coins, the alignment of a road and a pit containing tile fragments, situated close to a probable Late Iron Age settlement site. Anglo-Saxon coins and medieval remains had also been recorded in the area. The Grand Union Canal passed through The Grove Estate, and several bridges over it survived, including one which was a Grade I Listed Building. It was concluded that further investigative work could be required at the site, as there was a potential for archaeological remains associated with the gardens and with the medieval manor. Any development could also impact on the setting of the Listed Building. [AIP] |
