Abstract: |
Known archaeology in the area included; the Iron age hillfort of Caesar's Camp, a Romano-British settlement and industrial site (both S.A.M.s) and at SU860644 the proposed route crossed the line of the Roman, London-Silchester Road.\nThe area was archaeologically evaluated by excavation of a specified sample of the total area to be disturbed ( along an easement 50m wide) and dependant on land-use, either machine-dug transects and trenches were dug or trial pits placed.\nResults showed that there was no positive evidence associated with the Iron Age or Romano-British sites directly within the proposed development site but indicated that there were potential archaeological features of prehistoric origins around four trial pits; 110 & 111, 194 & 195. It was recommended that these should be excavated and watching briefs carried out on the rest of the development route.\n(abrev. from report)\n |
