Abstract:
Trial trenches and a watching brief were instigated at the two buildings known as No. 6 and No. 7 King Street prior to the conversion of the shops into one building. Both buildings were knonw to date to the 18th century and as such were listed structures. The area to the rear of the buildings once made up part of the land of the Robartes Great House which was built in the latter half of the 16th century. Trenches to the rear of No. 6 located a deep channel cut into natural subsoils and revetted by shillet walls. Material from the infill of the channel suggested that it may have predated the extension of the Great House outbuildings along the line in 1663. Other finds pointed strongly towards 16th and 17th century activity in the area, including imported artefacts from Spain and Belgium. High status building materials were again linked to the great house. Evidence was also found of 18th century buildings, from both standing remains and below ground features and artefacts. Phases of 19th and early 20th century remodelling were also revealed. [Au]
