Abstract:
A desk-based archaeological and historical assessment was undertaken of a proposed development site. Although located in a built up area of the eastern suburbs of Canterbury just outside the city walls, little previous archaeological work had ever been undertaken. Very limited work in the late 1980s showed that remains of Roman, Saxon, medieval and post-medieval date still survived within the proposed development area despite much sub-ground disturbance caused by previous sub-basements and later facilities for Martin Walter's garage which occupied the site from the second half of the 1950s to the late 1980s. The site extended south to Dover Street, once an ancient main route, to join the city with the Dover Road and the site of the late Saxon and later cattle market known as 'Rithercheape'. From the late Saxon period and on through the medieval and much of the post-medieval period, this important road route was lined with houses and shops serving both the local community and the market trade. Even today, more than 40 of the buildings in this small street were Listed Grade II Buildings. Further archaeological mitigation was recommended. [Au(adp)]
