Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was carried out on land adjacent to Keel Toys, Foster Road, Ashford Business Park in advance of a proposed development of industrial units. Fifteen trenches encapsulating 464.68 square metres were machine excavated. All fifteen trenches revealed evidence for buried archaeological remains. This included field ditches and boundaries, pits, post holes, occupation deposits and possible ground beam slots. Pottery recovered from excavated features was mainly of the late Bronze Age to Iron Age date (c.900 to 50 BC). A single ditch had pottery of late Anglo-Saxon or early medieval date. Environmental samples were collected from excavated deposits. The small quantity of animal bone was in a moderate state of preservation, with only cattle and sheep/goat identifiable. Known archaeology in the immediate vicinity indicated the site formed only part of a more extensive, multi-period site, including later Iron Age and early Roman settlement. A summary of the proposed foundation layout was compared to the known depth and extent of archaeology within the site. [Au(adp)]
